Coleman was born and raised in the town of Blackpool, Lancashire. She was educated at Arnold School in Blackpool. As headgirl, she earned straight A grades in her A Levels. Steven Moffat announced at a Doctor Who press conference on 21 March that Coleman, who had replaced Karen Gillan as the companion of the Doctor since Arthur Darvill left the series and was to play the role of Matt Smith. Moffat decided to choose her for the role since she seemed to have the best chemistry with Smith. She also spoke more quickly than he does.
